“The Old Beginning” and “John Turner Davis” are the Rotunda Theatre’s productions as part of the Metroplex-wide Horton Foote Festival. The Festival will run from March 14, 2011 (Horton Foote’s birthday) to May 1. During that month and a half, the work of the late great Horton Foote will be celebrated across the Metroplex. “The Old Beginning” looks at the struggle between a father and a son as the younger man tries to find himself and must break with the old traditions to do it. “John Turner Davis” is the story of a young boy abandoned by his family who must find his own ways of belonging.

Horton Foote has been called America’s greatest playwright and a national treasure. He is a Texas playwright—through and through. He is often praised for his ability to truthfully portray the people and languages of this state. Although he is known most for his screenplays “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Tender Mercies”, he was the master of the one-act play. His characters have a timelessness, a familiarity and a gentleness that draws us to their struggles as if they were our own.
