Who We Are

History

Since 1846—when Dallas was a frontier village visited by circuit-riding Methodist preachers—First United Methodist Church (FUMC Dallas) has worked to magnify God’s love in the heart of the city. The 1916 union of Trinity Methodist and First Methodist created the momentum to serve a rapidly growing downtown. Even amid World War I fundraising challenges, a 2,000-member congregation laid the cornerstone of our Harwood & Ross home in 1921, and the first worship service in our graceful sanctuary followed on February 7, 1926. Nearly a century later, that sanctuary still offers space for belonging, purpose, justice, and joy to all who enter.

Mission & Vision

Mission: To magnify God’s love for all people by creating space for belonging, purpose, justice, and joy.

Vision: To be a church that illuminates a divine path toward spiritual growth—within ourselves, our city, and our denomination—so that all may flourish.

Guided by these commitments, FUMC Dallas nurtures souls, strengthens community, and partners with neighbors to build a more just and compassionate world.

Beliefs

Rooted in Wesleyan heritage, we hold the core convictions of the United Methodist Church: Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience guide us; God’s love is active and engaged; and that love always presses toward justice and liberation.

Because every person is created with sacred worth, belonging, purpose, justice, and joy are not aspirations but daily practices.
We welcome people of every age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, economic background, and political perspective—embracing diversity not just in word, but in action. Here at FUMC Dallas, you can belong without condition, discover your purpose, stand for justice, and share in the deep joy of life transformed by Christ.
